Federal Premium 9mm ammo with the Hydra-Shok projectile is one of the stalwart members of the ultra-premium class of ammunition for the 147 grain jacketed hollow point 9mm loads. In fact you would find it very hard to locate a more proven round in the 147 grain arena, with many law enforcement agencies opting for this round, time and again. That speaks volumes to the credibility of the load; of Federal and of the 9mm in general when it comes to widespread duty use. With so many people talking down this round in the 1980’s and 1990’s as other options came and went on the market; there was alas, a resurgence of this load whereby people started looking at hard evidence turned in by law enforcement which led to subtle but important improvements on this round and across the line.
The Federal brand name suffers no bad press, especially with regards to their pistol defensive ammo; the premium component selection makes this round what it is. The ultra-premium powders, projectile (the Hydra-Shok) and cases make this a hard act to follow. The 960 feet per second muzzle velocity and adequate ft. lbs. of energy show its capability to stop a threat in a single shot. The penetration can be more than 15” after passing through several layers of cloth to simulate heavy clothing.
