There’s two ways to get your hands on authentic cowboy 45 Long Colt ammo. The first is to turn your old DeLorean into a time machine – complete with a 1.21 gigawatt flux capacitor – and go back to the mid-1870s to get yourself a box. The second, easier way is to order this ammo by Black Hills.

This cartridge has an unsophisticated 250 grain lead round nose flat point bullet. FMJs hadn’t been invented by the time the 45 LC hit the scene, so no need for that in an authentic cowboy load. Its lack of a jacket makes this bullet safer for shooting metallic silhouettes, and its flat point helps the bullet connect with a sheet of steel so it can topple it over. You definitely want a flat nose profile on your bullet if you intend to load it in a lever-action rifle, and the big, heavy bullet’s certainly going to do a number on any varmints you catch skulking around your homestead!

The South Dakotan manufacturer hasn’t made this ammo completely authentic, though. Their Boxer primer is non-corrosive, which is especially good for a classic shooting iron that you’re trying to preserve. Their powder is also smokeless, and very clean-burning at that. And if you’re a cowboy reloader, you’ll have 50 good opportunities to practice your art once these rounds’ new brass cases have all been emptied!
