It’s not rocket science: when a ~1/8 ounce lead ball strikes its target at a velocity higher than the speed of sound, it’s bound to leave a mark. And this shell is loaded with nine lead balls. Winchester’s hard lead stays round during ignition and following impact, which ensures the narrow pattern and deep penetration that are both requisite for hunting. The pellets are surrounded by granulated buffering, which only does more to preserve pellet sphericity and shrink pattern diameter. More pellets on target: never a bad thing.
