Those who need to shoot the .38 special out of personal defense weapons and want a very mildly recoiling, but still potent round for stopping the threat need look no further. This is the one. The 110 grain Hydra-shok projectile is a potent self-defense player.
The .38 special has endured a bit of difficulty as a self-defense round with the .357Magnum so closely related and with some anemic numbers in penetration in years past, but this round is anything but anemic given the penetration of over 12 inches in gelatin tests and the accurate, consistent expansion of the proven Hydra Shok projectile. 980 feet per second at the muzzle and 280 ft. lbs. of energy make this a realistic choice for self defense when recoil can be a problem or when exotic frame materials mean you need a straightforward load for your revolver (the lightweight revolver frames come to mind).
