A Precision Hunter round’s name sums up its purpose tidily: to provide the accuracy and the terminal performance that a factory load has to have for its hunter to dominate in the field. This 338 Lapua Magnum cartridge by Hornady achieves its accuracy largely because its casing perfectly seats a 270 grain ELD-X projectile, which features a Heat Shield polymer tip that will not warp one iota when broiled by air friction. The ELD-X further benefits accuracy with its streamlined secant ogive profile that measurably lessens its overall bearing surface, Advanced Manufacturing Process jacket with the superior concentricity needed for stability in flight, and boat tail design which flattens its trajectory to that like a laser’s. A high quality brass casing and consistent propellant load round off this round’s accuracy to virtual perfection.
The ELD-X’s Heat Shield tip sits on the rim of its jacket and extends downward into the core beneath. At low velocity impact, the tip drives inward to cause enormous expansion with up to 90 percent weight retention for a wide and deep wound cavity. At high velocity impact the ELD-X still manages to expand greatly while holding on the no less than 50 percent of its weight thanks to the InterLock ring which mechanically binds its core and jacket together. Such lethality at any distance coupled with the ability to go so far — that’s why this round is made for hunting.
