Despite the best efforts of designers, engineers, and perhaps elitist shooters, the .45 ACP continues to tack a strong course remaining a strong, reliable choice for a variety of different tasks. Well suited for the backpacker in boar or brown bear countries, or those of us concerned with predators of the two-legged variety, it is enjoying as much service now as probably any time in its over-century of existence.
The .45 ACP typically is found in two common loadings: 185 grain “light” slugs, and the burly G.I. standard 230 grain weight. While lacking the muzzle energy of the spicy 10mm or .357 Magnum, the .45 ACP maintains a long and storied reputation of having no problem putting bad people down with one shot, as well as moose, bears, and other dangerous animals.
Federal Premium HST in .45 ACP offers a 230 grain JHP which is advertised to expand to ¾”, wreaking havoc on whatever soft tissue it contacts. It is rated at 890 f/ps from the muzzle, producing 404 ft. lbs of energy. Again, not exactly the staggering energy of a magnum, but .45s have a reputation for getting the job done well regardless of what the performance specs state. It is just one of those intangibles of the breed.
You will be hard pressed to find a better deal on this premium-grade defense ammunition than buying it in 1,000 round bulk. This deal brings it down into the price point of a lot of target loads, so stock on this for your personal cache, or equip your department but don’t sit on it; it will not last long.
