Best New Handgun: Browning 1911-22 A1 — In the early 1900s jungle warfare in the Philippines exposed the inadequacies of the .38 revolver and sent the U.S. Army on a search for an official large-caliber semiautomatic service sidearm. After a famed government test in 1910 when it fired 6,000 rounds in two days without a malfunction, the single test gun being dunked in a water bucket when it overheated, John Moses Browning’s “Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911” became that sidearm.
Now, in honor of the 100th anniversary of a great firearm, Browning has come out with a new scaled-down version in .22 Long Rifle, the 1911-22 A1. We used Remington 40-grain .22 Target rounds to test-fire the gun, albeit somewhat less than 6,000 times in a row. The best performance was a 21⁄2-inch five-shot group fired from a rest at 25 yards. Though it has a heavy factory trigger, for plinking or for teaching a kid to shoot, the 1911-22 A1 has a lot of potential. -T.M.

NOTICE REGARDING EVO 922R KITS The EVO 922R PARTS AND FOLDING STOCK KIT (“EVO 922R KIT”) is intended to be used in conjunction with a CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1 Pistol. Under federal law, attaching a stock to a firearm with a barrel less than 16” amounts to making a short barreled rifle (SBR). Prior to making an SBR, the owner of the firearm must first register the firearm with ATF and pay the appropriate tax. Additionally, federal law (the “922(r) statute”) prevents a person from making a rifle using more than 10 of the parts listed in 27 CFR 478.39 if the resulting rifle would be “non-sporting” under federal law. A Scorpion SBR would be “non-sporting” under federal law, hence the EVO 922R KIT. ATF has taken the position that an SBR is made when unassembled parts are placed in close proximity in such a way that they “serve no useful purpose other than to make a rifle having a barrel less than 16 inches in length… or convert a complete weapon into such an NFA firearm…” See ATF Ruling 2011-4. CZ-USA takes no position on exactly what “close proximity” means in the context of dealers and distributors of firearms. Purchasers of the EVO 922R KIT, including dealers and distributors, are solely responsible for ensuring they are in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the assembly, manufacture, and possession of SBRs and SBR components, including but not limited to 18 U.S.C. § 922(r) and 27 CFR 478.39 and related regulations and rulings, and encourages you to consult with your attorney or to contact ATF should you have questions are your particular circumstance. For more info on the steps necessary to convert your pistol to an SBR, read here: http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2012/10/daniel-zimmerman/want-a-short-barreled-rifle-heres-how/

Introducing the RUGER SR1911, a classically styled pistol designed with all of the modern manufacturing advances that you have come to expect from Ruger. Accurate, rugged and reliable, the SR1911 is 100% American-made in American factories with American workers. Enthusiasts enjoy. Competition beware.
From the Ruger Press RoomApril 18, 2011
Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR) is proud to announce the Ruger® SR1911, an “All American” classic rendition of John Browning’s most famous handgun design. The public debut of the Ruger SR1911 pistol will take place during the NRA Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania April 29 – May 1.
The single-action .45 Auto Ruger SR1911 features a bead-blasted stainless steel frame and slide, precision CNC machined for a precise slide-to-frame fit. The stainless steel barrel and bushing are produced simultaneously, from the same ordnance-grade barstock, for a precise fit and improved accuracy. The slide features rear cocking serrations and a dovetailed three-dot sight system with a Novak® rear sight and standard front sight.
“We are very proud to offer a 1911 pistol, an icon of American gun design and manufacturing,” said Ruger CEO Michael Fifer. “In this 100-anniversary year of the introduction of the Government Model 1911 it is only fitting that such a firearm be completely manufactured in America with all American-made components.”
The Ruger SR1911 pistol features a titanium firing pin and heavy firing pin spring, which negates the need for a firing pin block, offering an updated safety feature to the original “Series 70” design without compromising trigger pull weight. An extended thumb safety offers improved manipulation and an oversized beavertail grip safety provides positive function and reliability. A visual inspection port offers visual confirmation of a round in the chamber.
Positive extraction is facilitated by an improved internal extractor. The plunger tube for both the slide stop and thumb safety is integral to the frame and will never shoot loose. The swedged link pin also will not shoot loose. The SR1911 uses a skeletonized hammer and an aluminum, skeletonized trigger with an adjustable over-travel stop. The Ruger SR1911 features a standard recoil guide system and flat mainspring housing.
The Ruger SR1911 grips feature a Ruger logo in checkered hardwood panels. Each pistol is shipped with a bushing wrench and a soft case. The SR1911 will fit currently available holsters.
